Current late blight forecast and management recommendations

Columbia Basin Late Blight Alert - issued August 27, 2008

Late blight has been found in two fields NW of Paterson. Potato fields on the Horse Heaven Hill south to the Columbia River should be treated with a late blight fungicide at least weekly until harvest. Fields in this area with late blight should be treated with a late blight fungicide on a 5-7 days schedule until harvest. Harvest only during dry weather. All fields in the Columbia Basin should be monitored for late blight at least twice a week. Especially monitor near the center pivot, low lying areas, and sections that may receive extra water. Please contact me if you field or suspect late blight.

Late blight has also been reported in Minidoka Co in Southern Idaho.

Water needs of the potato crop are now decreasing and irrigation water should be applied accordingly. Cooler night temperatures expected in September will favor late blight so continue to be on your guard.

Please contact Dennis Johnson at 509 335 3753 if you find or suspect any late blight.
